Training
Bolton Priestley prides itself in offering excellent training opportunities for all employees. Our aim is to encourage members of staff at all levels to develop their technical skills and we have a training programme for graduate engineers to help them to become chartered.
We have strong links with City University in London, frequently offering industrial placements to their students and we currently sponsor one of our technicians in Selby to attend Leeds Metropolitan University on a part time degree course. Through our links with local schools & colleges we take students for their work experience, so they can assess the role of structural engineers within society and the construction industry.
Senior members of staff present in-house seminars as part of our graduate training programme, covering various design topics as well as our role with clients and within design teams. This helps share knowledge through the company and is beneficial for the training and development of both the graduates and the presenters. Recent topics include:
- Working with Architects
- Wind and Snow Loading
- Masonry Design
- Steel & Composite Beams
- Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs
- CDM Regulations Workshop
This in house training is supplemented by various CPD seminars given by outside bodies, usually over lunchtime. These are a useful source of information and highlight what is currently available within the industry. Some typical examples of these are:-
- RMD Kwickform – Temporary works
- Hepworth – Hepworth drainage products
- Ancon – The structural use of stainless steel in buildings
- Uretek – Ground improvement (without the use of underpinning or piling)
- Roger Bullivant – Piling & foundations
- Proctor Group – Building on contaminated land
All our engineers are trained in Health & Safety and the requirements of the CDM Regulations with reference to designers’ duties and we encourage them to sit the tests for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS Cards) as Regular Site Visitors.
We also encourage individuals to attend various technical courses run by external bodies such as IStructE, ICE, SCI etc.
