The Directors

The company is run by three directors:- Chris Priestley, Paul Bolton and Geoff Othick, who seek to combine experience, enthusiasm, creativity and intuition with simple value for money, functionality and competence, with a keen eye on buildability at all times – we have a vested interest to ensure that the reputation of the company for quality and service is maintained.

We are all ‘hands on’, wanting to exercise our skills as engineers and use these to the benefit of our clients and their design teams. All staff report to one of us and we also pride ourselves in mentoring young engineers to help them achieve their own ambitions as professional engineers.

Staff Training

Bolton Priestley pride ourselves in offering excellent training opportunities for all our staff. Our aim is to encourage staff at all levels to develop their technical skills and we have a training programme for graduate engineers to help them to become chartered.
We have strong links with City University in London and frequently offer placements to students for their industrial placement. We currently sponsor one of these students to complete his final year studies. We also sponsor one of our technicians in Selby to attend Leeds Metropolitan University on a part time degree course. We also have links with local schools & colleges to take students for their work experience, so they can assess the role of structural engineers within society and the construction industry.
Senior members of staff present in-house seminars as part of our graduate training programme, covering various design topics as well as our role with clients and within design teams. This helps share knowledge through the company and is beneficial for the training and development of both the graduates and the presenters. Recent topics include:

  • Working with Architects
  • Wind and Snow Loading
  • Masonry Design
  • Steel & Composite Beams
  • Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs
  • CDM Regulations Workshop

This in house training is supplemented by various CPD seminars given by outside bodies, usually over a lunchtime. These are a useful source of information and highlight what is currently available within the industry. Some typical examples of these are:-

  • RMD Kwickform – Temporary works
  • Hepworth – Hepworth drainage products
  • Ancon – The structural use of stainless steel in buildings
  • Uretek – Ground improvement (without the use of underpinning or piling)
  • Roger Bullivant – Piling & foundations
  • Proctor Group – Building on contaminated land

All our engineers are trained in Health & Safety and the requirements of the CDM Regulations with reference to designers duties and we encourage them to sit the tests for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS Cards) as Regular Site Visitors.
We also encourage individuals to attend various technical courses run by external bodies such as IStructE, ICE, SCI etc.

Social & Recreation

We believe it is important that our staff socialise as well as work together. With having different offices and a mix of regional, cultural and ethnic backgrounds it is important that we understand each other and individual’s needs. We encourage informal social get-togethers, which range from a few drinks after work to meals, bowling, trips to the cinema, football, running etc.

As a company we try to arrange two social outings a year which are an opportunity for staff to integrate and have some fun:

Cruise to the Thames Barrier - 2005 Serpentine Runners - 2007

Go Ape Sherwood Forest - 2008 Skating at Somerset House - Christmas 2007

Beer tasting Lincoln - 2006 Snow fun

Serpentine Run
